FLY FISHING RIVER NERA
Vliegvissen op rivier Nera
. On Monday 13th 2018, the Italian fishing adventure began early in the morning. Osvaldo picked me up exactly at 08:00 at the Agriturismo Podere Calledro in San Liberato, a town in the south of Umbria.
We were leaving for a trip of about 80 kilometers to river Nera for a day fishing for trout. After departure we first had to collect a fishing license at the post office on the way to the river, followed by a delicious Italian cappuccino at the bar not far from the post office.
This done, we left to the final destination where a local no-kill permit had to be purchased because we were going to fish a no-kill area where fish must be immediately released. We also got some tasty sandwiches for our lunch.
The weather was beautiful, but the water in the river was very cold and waders were highly recommended. With a pair of thick green socks and the right clothes, we were ready for it. Osvaldo had the right material so we could start quickly. The stretch of water we had chosen was already occupied by other anglers, and we decided to move downstream.
The morning was spent improving casting: being not used to fish fast flowing rivers, it turned out not to be easy.
After the good explanation and instructions from Osvaldo, I managed to cast the fly to the proper spot.
Unfortunately fish did not respond to my offers but the environment and beautiful nature compensated a lot. What a beauty of nature and beautiful flowing river! The hotspots were quickly visited by my fly while wading through the river. Because of the good instructions from Osvaldo, the technique improved and casts became better and better.
Unfortunately no trout was caught until lunch. We could see them swimming, but they are oh so shy…
After the tasty sandwiches and the well-deserved rest under the hot sun, the afternoon session began. Osvaldo showed me a few new techniques and things improved a lot. The fish unfortunately remained absent except for a nice strike but the fish unhooked quickly.
There were other fishermen: they, too, had problems to catch fish…
No trout for the Dutchman but he had learnt a lot and had a very nice day. After a closing beer and a good conversation, the successful day was concluded. A ‘belissima’ experience and a new richer friend.
I have to come back again… trout are waiting for me!!!
Thank you, Osvaldo
