Fishing in Italy asks for a national licenze and is open all year round with a number of limitations. Rivers where trout are present cannot be fished from the first Sunday of October to the last Sunday of February but there are many exceptions (earlier opening or delayed closing, this depending on local regulations). Chub, Barbel, Pike, Grayling, Carp, Black Bass (just to mention fly takers) have their “closed periods”, which is not the same in every province. No-Kill stretches have their own open/closed months and special rules. Wading is permitted everywhere (but not encouraged) with very few exceptions.

I was born in Milan some half a century ago and after many years spent visiting most rivers and lakes of North Italy, I moved to the Centre – not far from Rome – where I found a real paradise as far as flyfishing is concerned.
I have been fishing since the very green years of my life and have switched to flyfishing in 1977. The dry fly is – like most of us – my favorite but I think that a complete flyangler should have a deep knowledge of all the techniques offered by his tackle (given that the “spirit” of fly angling is not denaturalized). Environment improving and respect are also very important to me.
I have fished most European rivers (Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, England, Ireland, ex-Yugoslavia, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Far East, New Zealand…). As for Italy, there are few rivers I have not visited
I do not consider fishing as a sport but as a style of life, where respect for the fish and environmental nature is at the top of the activity. While respecting other anglers’ points of view, I support catch&release also in free waters.
I have translated quite a number of flyfishing books into Italian and am fond of history and philosophy.
