Lake Salto is one of the many lakes in the province of Rieti and has been created in 1940 for electricity purposes by means of a dam on river Salto thus submerging 4 small villages, still present on the bottom of the lake.
Due to the water being used mostly for agriculture, in Summer the lake level decreases to lowest while during the raining season all the exposed areas are fully covered with water. Another scope of the lake is to provide water in case of fires.
The lake – offering great opportunities for water sports like water-skiing, kite-flying, swimming, boating and so on – contains pike, black bass, cyprinids and mostly perch. Fishing is also possible in the river: trout are not huge but the small and savage environment makes flyangling a real challenge!!!
