Everybody knows this water as “Canale – Channel” rather than “Fiume – River” because it reminds a chalk-stream in appearance: deep and cold water, almost flat surface, gin clear water, lack of overflooding, constant speed…. Stepping into the water is impossible due to the depth and this makes fishing very hard because trout see the angler from a distance. If you decide to fish the “Santa” (as local anglers call it), leave waders at home: short boots are sufficient, just to keep your feet dry…
The action of fishing is very simple: just walk along the bank and detect the fish’ activity: casting gives no problems given that the leader is not straight on the water because the surface conceals a lot of microwaves and makes the fly drag. Deep nymph fishing might give good results but fishing the rise (seeing the trout coming to the surface aiming to your dry fly) is priceless…
It flows not far from Rieti, more or less 1hour’s drive from Viterbo.
