River Nera has its springs in Castelsantangelo sul Nera, in Sibillini Mountains (region Marche). They are at 902mt above sea level. After Visso, some 5km below the springs, the river receives water from many other small streams. After some 20km it enters region Umbria, giving birth to the wonderful Valnerina (–> valley of river Nera). A channel brings part of its water to Lake Piediluco, in Latium.
Not far from Triponzo, it receives river Corno and runs through some nice villages, all of them under Perugia and Terni provinces. Before crossing Terni, it receives river Velino, which creates the world famous Marmore Waterfalls.
Some kilometers after Terni, it creates a small lake, San Liberato, and enters river Tiber not far from Orte.
The most interesting stretch is divided into 4 different no-kill sections. It also has some very nice “free water” where no special permit is needed. The four stretches have different rules and different properties: quiet and deep runs, very fast water covered by trees and bushes, rocky bottom with deep holes, very shallow stretches hosting unseen fish…
Average size of fish is 40cm but there are also specimen of more than 60cm.
Not an easy water, it is considered one of the best trout rivers of Central Italy.
