River Sele

Fishing in Italy asks for a national licenze and is open all year round with a number of limitations. Rivers where trout are present cannot be fished from the first Sunday of October to the last Sunday of February but there are many exceptions (earlier opening or delayed closing, this depending on local regulations). Chub, Barbel, Pike, Grayling, Carp, Black Bass (just to mention fly takers) have their “closed periods”, which is not the same in every province. No-Kill stretches have their own open/closed months and special rules. Wading is permitted everywhere (but not encouraged) with very few exceptions.

This river – excellently managed by a local association – is rather far from Viterbo and fishing its water asks for a longer stay in one of the many BBs and hotels scattered in the area (also famous for its Spas).  Trout is present in good number and in big size. River Sele is also known for the huge presence of Oligoneurella rhenana which is some periods of the year literally covers the water springing the fish’s underwater activity to crazy frenzy.

Fishing in these conditions is often extremely difficult and frustrating but during the rest of the year trout rise freely to attractors, sedges, terrestrials, spents and imitative patterns.
