River Tronto

Fishing in Italy asks for a national licenze and is open all year round with a number of limitations. Rivers where trout are present cannot be fished from the first Sunday of October to the last Sunday of February but there are many exceptions (earlier opening or delayed closing, this depending on local regulations). Chub, Barbel, Pike, Grayling, Carp, Black Bass (just to mention fly takers) have their “closed periods”, which is not the same in every province. No-Kill stretches have their own open/closed months and special rules. Wading is permitted everywhere (but not encouraged) with very few exceptions.

The springs of this nice river are in Latium (not far from Amatrice), in the province of Rieti. After some kilometers, river Tronto enters region Marche and end its way into the Adriatic Sea. In the lower stretch there are very shy and selective trout, thus attracting a lot of anglers.

Few know, however, that a few kilometers above the river turns into a trout/cyprinid water, running through a savage and really charming environment where climbing skill is more important than casting. Preys are huge and extremely shy: a tempting challenge for those who are not just after fish but look for something different.
