On Sunday 25 November 2018 I visited the flyfair in Putte, Belgium. There I came to “Fly Fishing Holidays in Italy”, a stand promoting fly fishing trips to Central Italy (www.flyfishingholydaysitaly.com) where I met Osvaldo Velo, the owner of this company, with whom I started talking about a possible holiday in that area.
Osvaldo speaks English very well (I speak a little less but when two anglers talk about fishing, language is always perfect!). I let this conversation settle well in my brain and after a good thought I contacted Osvaldo again.
I was planning a vacation with my caravan and since I did not want to be too far from the river, Osvaldo did his utmost to find a suitable (and very nice!) campsite near the fishing spot.
I received all the information, including photos, that he himself took and sent to me by e-mail (for which I am grateful) and it testified to a great commitment to his company.
After a lot of contacts back and forth via e-mail it was finally time: on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, we arrived at the camping Il Collaccio in Preci.
After a short acclimatization on site, a couple of days later Osvaldo picked me up.
It was a warm welcome; we then drove for a short drive to the post office for the national fishing license and all the stuff for two days fishing in the nokill area of river Nera.
Once all the paperwork done, he called the river keeper for the last updates about the water conditions and had a quick (for Italian standards) cappuccino before jumping into our waders and reaching the river.
There I received some extra text and explanation from Osvaldo: it was time to fish in crystal clear water where the fish could see me well. I was repeatedly recommended to stay tight against the edge and not to move too quickly.
After a few hours and some fish, we stopped for lunch at the end of which we continued for the rest of the afternoon in a breathtaking environment and river.
At the end of the fishing day I recorded +10 caught fish and a number of missed on the dry fly. A very successful day in good company.
That evening, Osvaldo stayed overnight at the camping so that we could start the day early, but hey, after all it’s vacation and were back at the starting block as late as 09,00, ready to take off again.
After another short drive by car, we reached an upper part of the Nera, where the water was even more beautiful compared with the previous spot. Again, delicious fishing with – hélas – only 2 catches and many missed. Unfortunately there was a storm somewhere in the mountains and the change of the water conditions surely influenced the results.
Once back at the campingsite, we separated: our holidays were over and our plans were to leave the following day.
During the night, an earthquake stroke the mountains in central Italy: luckly no damages nor problems at the camping. Again, Osvaldo was helpful and the next morning I got a message from him offering help.
Top Guide and trip, I say, and definitely worth repeating.
